   WHY NOT GOOGLE FONTS

   This used to be a <link> to fonts.googleapis.com. On 2026-08-17 the dev
   deployment was rendering in Segoe UI and nobody could see why: the page
   looked almost right, nothing errored in our code, and
   `document.fonts.check('1em Inter')` returned false. The console had two
   404s for UcCB3FwrK3iLTeHuS_nV....woff2 — while Google was, at that moment,
   serving UcC73FwrK3iLTeHuS_nV....woff2. A long-cached copy of Google's CSS
   was pointing at font binaries Google had already deleted. Nothing on our
   side was wrong and nothing on our side could fix it.

   That is the whole argument. The product's typeface was a third-party
   network dependency with a cache that can outlive the files it names, and
   the failure mode is silent: no error, no broken layout, just a different
   font than the one the design was drawn in. Self-hosting also removes a
   render-blocking cross-origin request from every page load, which matters
   for a product that has spent this much effort on latency.

   Variable font, weight axis 300-800 in one file per subset, so the six
   weights the UI uses cost one download rather than six. Subsets keep their
   original unicode-ranges: a browser fetches `latin` (47 KB) and nothing
   else unless the content needs it.
